Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corp v. Burwell
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that some for-profit companies can assert religious rights to block their employees’ access to group health plan coverage for FDA-approved contraception as required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Read Lambda Legal’s amicus brief.
Baskin v. Bogan
Lambda Legal won its federal lawsuit in Indiana seeking the freedom to marry after a U.S. District Court Judge ruled the state’s marriage ban unconstitutional. Hundreds of same-sex couples married over three days before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals granted a motion to stay filed by the Indiana Attorney General. Indiana appealed the ruling. The Seventh Circuit granted Lambda Legal’s emergency request to lift the stay to protect Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney’s marriage while the case proceeds, as Niki battles Stage IV ovarian cancer.
Rhoades vs. Iowa
In a sweeping Lambda Legal victory, the Iowa Supreme Court set aside the conviction of Nick Rhoades, an HIV-positive Iowan who was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison, with required registration as a sex offender, after having a one-time sexual encounter with another man during which they used a condom.
Conde v. Rius Armendariz
Lambda Legal joined a federal lawsuit, on behalf of four couples and Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, challenging Puerto Rico’s discriminatory marriage ban.

Amira Gray
Lambda Legal filed a complaint with the Washington, D.C., Office of Human Rights on behalf of Amira Gray, a transgender woman who was given a restaurant receipt with an anti-LGBT slur printed on it.
Kitchen v. Herbert

TerVeer v. Billington
The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled March 31, 2014, that Peter TerVeer stated claims for discrimination on the basis of sex and on the basis of religion, after being driven out of his job after his boss found out that TerVeer is gay. Read Lambda Legal's amicus brief.
Odgaard v. Iowa Civil Rights Commission
Lambda Legal filed a motion to intervene and an Iowa Supreme Court brief on behalf of Lee Stafford and Jared Ellars after a local business refused to rent event space to them for a party to celebrate their marriage, based on the owner’s religious beliefs.
